Have any of you, with the sensibilities of the Democratic, liberal, progressive political persuasion, ever read what is routinely posted in the Current Events & Politics forum here in DH?

I have tried to be a regular poster there, but I am regularly defeated by the rabid rants, the blatant bigotry and racism, the screwy survivalist theories, the kooky "Christians" predictions and and crazy conspiracy officianados.

Those people are NUTS! And they are mean!

There is a group who will not let go of their claim of Obama's "illegitimacy" as a candidate/president.

There are those who are preparing for the end of days where only the "true believers" will be favored, protected, and allowed to live.

There are the haters: they hate women and routinely insult many of us; they hate blacks and sound very much like the KKK, some even posting photos of KKK in their robes; they hate Democrats; they hate foreigners; they hate taxes; they hate spending; they hate anyone who needs help; they hate almost everyone!

They are some of the most crass, uneducated, ignorant, narrow-minded, stupid people I have ever saeen. And all of these idiots are Americans. Outrageous. And embarrassing.

They wear me out! And I leave in disgust. I wish I could participate in vigorous discussions and debate, but these idiots aren't smart enough to even know what "discussion" and "debate" mean. It is so frustrating!

Anyone have a similar experience?

Can you say something to convince me to stay away from the virulent s**theads that represent what is the Current Events and Politics forum??!!

Please, talk me down!!

Peace, Pam

Pam, I'd never peeped into those forums before, but after reading your post here - I did today. I made several posts in the Politics forum. I saw some civil discussion going on, but also saw some idiotic stuff. I posted to the Obama signed executive order today thread, and one about will Obama make things better? thread.

I post regularly in the 50+ group. Racism, Obama-bashing, and Democrat/liberals bashing is prevalent there. That group is made up of mostly whites of the non-liberal persuasion. Diversity is badly lacking. I had pretty much tried to ignore all the hateful threads/posts, but in the past few days I started taking them on. They had gotten really rabid since President Obama was inaugurated. I felt I should take a stand and challenge them. I received support from a number of group members. From the racists and haters, I received what I expected - which was they denied being racists and haters - and they accused me of being condescending to them. But, I feel good about taking a stand and speaking up. I'm glad I didn't continue to ignore them.

My advice to you is, if there are more things in a group or forum that you like than you don't like - then stay in. Let the "bad actors" hear from you, if can stand the heat of taking them on. If you see more bad than good, then don't keep putting yourself thru the grief of reading the trash. My opinion about the rabid racism that is rearing it's ugly head right now is - this is coming from people who are scared to death of change. This is their knee-jerk reaction to realizing the color barrier has been dealt a major blow. They are losing the battle, they are the minority, and they know it. They are afraid, and they are throwing wild punches. But, I think when America in general sees that having a black President is not sending us to hell in a handbasket - the racist/hate speech will fade to far back-ground where it belongs.

Good morning, girls! So nice to read from people who make sense to me. I'm glad you are speaking up in the 50s, coolchick. I had almost quit saying anything, I was so sick of the conservatives. There have been some constructive conversation lately and for that I'm glad.

I have to agree that it is fear of the unknown that drives the majority. But, I have to say it is mixed with some paranoia! Ha!

And this is a matchmaking site?

A lot of them hide behind their screens and it probably makes their day
by trashing and bashing opposing point of views.

After reading 20 to 30 posts from certain individuals, you can easily see
the underlying racism, bigotry, and hatred.

If you really makes sense, they really trash and bash you, they block you,
or they overwhelm with pictures and clipart.

Very sad people.

Hey, gang. I decided to take a break for a couple of days. All the negativism and paranoid posts does get to me sometimes, plus if I don't watch it - I'll fritter away way too many hours in a day at the computer. Yes, Walter, I've noticed the need for some in the 50+ group to bombard with "cutesy" or almost-soft-porn pictures. Some of them carry on like horny teenagers. Well, I've gone off-topic. Let me go compose myself and get an attitude adjustment.

It's a pity that some people insist on expressing their opinions in such a mean-spirited way as to make others feel unwelcome.

Still, it has it's silver lining in that we get to find out just how obnoxious these people are. And since this is primarily a dating site, that's useful information. So check to see what sorts of posts the people you might be interested in have made and decide whether you could stand being around such a person.

I post regularly on the military board (Im retired a Army officer) and recently REALLY got into it with a couple crackpots who were making comments to the effect that "someone" should in their words "Do a Kennedy to the new President". There's one guy in particular who is a cretin, posts vitriolic screed regularly, CLAIMS he is a vet (I dont believe him) and spends way too much time Listening to Hannity, O'Reilly and the dope fiend Limbaugh...he's pathetic.I was surprised to be supported for taking him to task by several other vets, even though I know that the its generally thought that the military is monlithic and a bastion of conservativism....I guess my point is these hatemongers are everywhere, there's just not as many of them as there was and they are losing ground like crazy!!

Hey, vampire, good point about checking out the posts of potential "date mates". You'd think those who post so crazy would realize that isn't attractive to someone checking out your profile. Good for you, skysoldier, thanks for standing up for decency & respect. I've also seen some posts that come real close to being assasination talk. That is really sick. If I ever see one that looks like an actual threat to act, I'll turn 'em in to the feds.
Walter, I've been working in the VA health care system for 31 years now, and hope that Secretary Shinseki will tackle the gross mis-management that has plagued the VA for the past 8 years. A lot of our problems have been due to lack of funds, but a lot is due to horrible management, and a culture of hiding mistakes. Training is a joke. I'm optimistic that things will change soon. You can read Secretary Shinseki's bio on the VA website at: www.va.gov

Hey, Pam. I really see now how rabid and crazy most all of the posts are on the Current Events/Politics Forum. I've been trying to get involved in discussions there, but you're right - they ignore all facts, gang up on you, and beat you down. It's 99% racists and wildly paranoid lunatics. Walter, I don't see how you stand it over there. Stick a fork in me, I'm done messing with that forum. Icky!

I've been called every name in the book. I learned a few new words too.
Been insulted but you know it is time to move on

I try to speak in the 3rd person and put editorial cartoons from the Nation's

I had the honor to have worked for the VA during the time Max Cleland was the Administrator (1977-1981). He was the best. Next to him was Jesse Brown, who came later.

I do political consulting in my spare time (Im retired Army, but have plenty keeping me occupied). When Kerry opened his Northern Ky office I was asked to speak.A group of "Swiftboaters' showed up to heckle. As soon as i took the podium I called on them to come down front and promised them they were safe and welcomed.I laid my ID and DD214 on the lecturn and asked to see theirs... half of these guys were college age, the others most likely never served...I ran them off....the crowds laughing got so loud ...it was hilarious. The next speaker was a black man who was blinded in Vietnam while serving with the 101st ABN....any of them I didnt rattle he sure did ! My point is lots of these types are clowns, irrational bigots and idealogues with no ability to reason or make their own intelligent case for the positions they are fed and swallow by a handful of high profile hate mongers.

I will agree with posting on the 50+ group's page. They are are anti anything not republican and I was assured that I couldn't be a patriot and a liberial. I have friends and family who have military backgrounds and service, they fall on both sides of the political fence. I listen to NPR, PBS and I do tune in FOX on occasion to try to hear both sides. I hate racist, bigots, and people who hate anything not like themselfs but I am not ready to say most republicans are crazed Limbaugh followers. I have traveled around the world and I will say George W. Bush is an idiot and an embarrassment to this great country!

Well, Lac...a lot of that mindset is fear-based & reactionary. They've had the false luxury of feeling like they we're on the side of might & right for the last 8 years....when in reality they've only been giving up their sons, daughters & jobs to make others richer.

Now they see that security being taken away by discussion, dissent & reminders that they are WAY closer to those 'damn welfare cheats' than they are the billionaires to which they aspire.

It's going to be a rough couple years yet.....until people's children are starving they will convince themselves the feel-good propaganda is true.

Thank you, my friends, for validating my feelings about the Current Events & Politics group. They are some of the worst people I have ever encountered.

Why anyone would want to know, nevermind DATE, any of them is a mystery to me!

I love talking about, and debating, lots of ideas and have friends of all political persuasions. No one I know would behave like those idiots do every day.

And DH has lost some wonderful people who used to post there and decided to leave when it became clear there was no possibility of intelligent debate there.

Please let me hear from others out there. I know you are there.

And to those who have posted here, please offer your own ideas for threads.

Let's create our own discussions here....without the ugly behavior, and certainly with more intelligence and class!

I don't spend much time here, but when I do, I peek in to see what is happening here and in the Current Events forum. It is amazing to me, reading the petty griping and scurrilous attacks they make against each other. If anyone writes anything in argument against another, ugly personal attacks ensue.

They will only allow those who agree with them to stay. The personal, ad hominum attacks are brutal and many otherwise rational, respectful people have left to avoid their nonsense.

I would like to participare sometimes, but have no patience with their nastiness. Does anyone have a different experience?

I will admit I'm not the brightest bulb in the box when it comes to politics. I don't watch or read the news as much as I should. But I'm not completely ignorant and do have a few things to say now and then.

First off, what scares me the most about our present administration is the total lack of any action by racially insensitive groups (e.g. white supremacists) against Obama or his family. Those who've been exceedingly verbal about how they hate him and want him out of office as quickly as possible, maybe even killed, have been surprisingly inactive regarding their threats. Are they empty? Who knows? But I'm a little leery of the fact that people who hate blacks and the Obamas in particular have taken no steps to remove him; that kinda tells me that something very bad is just over the horizon. Maybe I'm a little paranoid, but can you really blame me?

I find it interesting how much people bash Obama for having apparently done little to successfully pull us out of our present financial crisis in his first few months as president. Let me give you a scenario here: you're a soldier who's told that you're going into a war zone. You're not given any info about who you're fighting or why. You're given a loaded m-16, a full canteen, and a sleeping bag. When you're dropped, you realize the leader of the group that was supposed to be fighting on your side has made a mess of things and your enemies are winning. Total chaos is all around you and you've got limited supplies. You have no clue what your objectives are other than to wipe out "the enemy", but you know that you haven't been given a whole lot to work with.

This is the scenario Obama's presently in. A lot of Bush's policies, as well as corporate arrogance, have led to our present economic state of disaster. Am I the only one who remembers the corporate big-wigs who were asked on national television if they would be willing to give up their private jets?

Obama himself said that the situation probably wouldn't be completely resolved while he was in office, let alone in his first year as president.

Regardless of the mess Obama's been dropped into, you then have the people who have grown up with hatred inbred. Many people in the southeastern U.S. voted against Obama because they've spent their entire lives living in racist or semi-racist societies. Do you really think the sixties are gone in terms of racial war? In many places, racism as a way of life is still alive and well. Most of us have come away from Mississippi Burning and looked to the future; certain societies have not. Most outspoken amongst them are named groups such as the Arian Nations.

Like the old-school racists, many people have one way of thinking and are terrified that someone will come along to change that way of thinking. Anyone that's ever been scared of anything understands that you either cower in a corner when faced with your phobia or you lash out. It seems to me that Obama is a symbol of hope to most and fear to others. Therefore, people who are scared that their way of thinking is quickly disintegrating as a popular idea(s) are now lashing out against anyone who disagrees with them.

Personally, it pisses me off.

Oh, and for the record, I'm also a huge supporter of vets even if I'm not fully aware of all the issues associated with them. My apologies for being a bit on the ignorant side in terms of current events.

Red, why in the world are you disappointed that a terroristic act has not been implemented against our President? Makes we wonder where your real sympathies lie. If the hate groups are not taking violent action, that's a good thing. I trust that the FBI and CIA are keeping close tabs on them, and will do their best to stop a threat before it comes to fruition.

I also feel the need to challenge your assessment of our military. I can speak with some authority, as my son is an Army infantryman with two tours in Iraq under his belt. Our soldiers are not sent out not knowing who they are fighting or why. They actually receive good briefings on who they will be facing, and what the mission is. Are the missions always planned they best they could be? No, there have been mistakes in the past, and there will be mistakes in the future. War is hell. A good soldier completes the mission, even if he or she knows some idiot in Washington is f___ing things up. My son believes the invasion of Iraq was a colossal mistake, and that our continued involvement was also a mistake. He exercised his right to vote in the last Presidential election, and he voted for Barak Obama. Bottom line is, in combat, soldiers fight for each other.

Firstly, on the issue of the soldiers, that was an analogy I was using to describe Obama's present position in the financial crisis. He's scrambling to get as much as he can done as quickly as possible without any real hint as to what exactly is going to "solve the problem". He probably has some ideas, but right now he's just trying to keep up with things. If the NYSE is a busy-as-hell world, the White House's role - and the president's in particular - in our nations present economic crisis is ten times busier.

As to Obama himself, I voted for the man. I'm damned glad he got in, and not just because he's black (or half-black, or whatever). Yes, Obama wants to raise taxes; however, he wants to drain the money we have instead of trying to tap the funds of people who are barely scraping by. I grew up with little more than roof over my head and a meal in my belly; that's a lot more than some people have, but it's still not much. Only in the last few years has my family managed to drag its way out of the cesspool that is the poverty level. Even now, we're far from rich.

My point in terms of the lack of any action against Obama is that some people don't like a black man of any racial percentage anywhere near a position of even a small amount of power. A black president means legislation that could put a halt to many racist activities; my hope is that white supremacists won't be able to protest anymore because it'll be considered an open threat against the public - not necessarily terrorism, but pretty damn close. White supremacist parades are hopefully a thing of the past, though I predict they are anything but. What I'm saying is that the lack of any action against the president thus far seems to me to be the calm before the storm. Like I said, maybe I'm a little paranoid; I, for one, would love to see Obama greatly improve the financial situations of countless low-income families like my own and possibly improve welfare and health care for people like my grandmother; she's sixty-five and still runs around like she's thirty. She works hard and does more for my relatives than most people would, and she's had more problems in her life than even she'd care to admit. My impression is that Obama has some great ideas and I sincerely hope they come to fruition.

I'm not saying I want something to happen to him. I'm saying that I'm slightly afraid of what might happen if certain groups of people throughout the country let their anger at there being a black man in the White House build for very much longer.

Dear red, I don't understand your response to the military issue. To me, your response had nothing to do with that issue. If our President's ethnicity is unimportant to you, why do you keep bringing it up? As regards expressing fear of things that may or may not come to pass: Fear is a disabling state of being. Hope is an enabling state of being.

Re: White supremacist groups protesting... They have a right to assemble in public for peaceful protest, according to our constitution. The more they are held in the light, the more the ridiculousness of their beliefs becomes known to all. "Sunshine is the best disinfectant".

I too have had my ire raised by the childish and hateful namecalling, often by the uneducated. Though by no means is the vitrol limited to those who can't spell and use proper grammer, I did find a greater proportion of the literacy challenged among the distasteful posters.

Perhaps my greatest disappointment is the lost opportunity to share viewpoints and learn from one another.

I brought it up the first and second time because that was the whole point of my initial post. The racists out there do start to seem ridiculous after a while, but they are still out there. While MLK was back in the sixties and we've come a long way since then, I still remember the speech I did in college just a couple years ago about hate crimes. The statistics lists were so long per year - for Spokane alone, nevermind the rest of the nation - that even I was stunned. I don't stun easily. That's why it amazes me that no one's even attempted to oust the prez in any way other than to vote against him. Also, you brought the soldiers issue up in response to my analogy; I simply replied to your response.

Anyway, I think the reason people that are illiterate or poorly literate don't make good arguments isn't because they can't read or write; it's because they don't bother listening to an entire issue and so make judgments on what they heard. These judgments add to inferiority complexes already in place due to illiteracy and they thus mutate into a** holes.

liberal and red.

I agree that the most virulent groups of people do tend to generally have problems with being articulate. They also have a compelling need to distort facts in order to bolster their views. When they don't stick to facts, there's no way to have civil discourse with them. I'm all for lively and colorful discussions, but it's gotten crazy in my neck of the woods. There are many "Obama haters" in my area. Today, it made the news here that a study group in the Pentagon is recommending to the Secretary of Defense that smoking be prohibited in the military. The Obama haters here are blaming him for this, even though I've seen nothing to tie him to this story. The haters are trying to turn the story into "Obama wants to take away another one of our freedoms". He is even being accused of being a hypocrite, because he's a smoker. I don't think he had anything to do with the study, or with the recommendation.

Coolchick.

My response is this: does the military want to keep its soldiers?

Let's look at the issue a few years ago: no smoking in public places. You know how many bars lost business because of that law? Some places even had to close down because of it; some people lost their life savings because they couldn't afford to keep their doors open anymore due to the lack of customers, or so I heard.

My mother does payroll at a nursing home. Said nursing home used to have a smoking shelter, though residents could smoke in their rooms or anywhere outside. The smoking shelter had to be vacated and turned into something else (I don't know what). Now, my thought is this: okay, it's a public place. Fine; I get that. But this is also people's homes; if nothing else, let them smoke in their rooms - but noooooooo. Apparently, this falls within the definition of "public".

A friend of mine (whom I haven't seen in quite a while, though not due to this) almost got his a** arrested because he wanted a cig. When confronted by a security guard of the STA (bus) plaza for standing in the middle of the street to smoke, he said that he'd measured out fifteen feet from the entrances to the plaza on one side and bank on the other in order to determine that where he was standing was the only legal place he could smoke. He didn't get in trouble, but he did make a valid point.

Now let's look at the military:
You have a hundred troops stationed somewhere. Of those hundred, fifty smoke. Now they're told they can't be in the Army if they're smokers, so they have to be honorably discharged and lose their benefits (at least, that's the way I understand the idea to work) or quit cold-turkey. Let's say ten are able to quit cold-turkey; the rest take off. You suddenly have sixty soldiers stationed wherever instead of a hundred.

That's just an example, of course, but think about it: if people get kicked out because they're smokers, the military isn't going to get a lot of people signing up. Not only will they be losing people, they won't be replacing the ranks. That would mean half the USAF (or more) were just sent home.

AND THIS IS A GOOD THING?!

I understand the health issue, but I swear to god almighty I'll start chain-smoking Cubans if they ever pass a dumbass law like that. Our fighting men and women aren't over in Iraq because they want to be; many of them have families they'd love to be home with, but they've taken an oath to defend this country and its interests as best they can, even if it means their own demise. That's not an oath you can break easily. Why don't we just leave the soldiers alone, hm?

I made the mistake of posting over there. The forum topic is misleading. It should be titled "Right wing-nut jobs" forum or "Those with extremist views only". I didn't realize I was entering an area of posters with the kind of political views that I thought we'd defeated in Germany in WWII. The thread I was in got deleted. Just when I was having a nice conversation with a Canadian Citizen. Oh well, I doubt I'll go back there again. Those people are still angry they lost the civil war. They really need to get over that loss and face the fact they can't own slaves anymore.

Hi folks. Just a reminder. WE WON! Both houses of congress and Obama. Our biggest problem now is so-called "moderate" Democrats. I cringe when I hear about "moderate" Democrats. That means that those of us who think like Obama, and Obama himself, are too liberal to be considered moderates.
I love that DH asks on its profiles if one is "liberal", "conservative", etc. so I know to stay away from conservatives for dating. I haven't seen that on other dating sites.
Its true about the wacos. I live in a town full of them. If they could, they would seceed from the rest of California. They're not just on DH, they are all around me.

Hey!!!!!!

In my opinion, the Current Events & Politics forum has been highjacked by right-wing, conspiracy-obsessed, paranoid, often illiterate, occasionally mentally ill, crude non-thinkers who regurgitate FAUX News updates as if they are gospel.

And they spew hatred in ways I have never seen in my life. Why the HELL would anyone want to date any one of them?!

Too may angry white men...and a few angry white women...who clearly see the changing demographic and tide of political beliefs as threats.

I don't want to know any of them. They are an embarrassment.

And I refuse to engage in any kind of argument with any of them. They do not argue facts. They sneer and shout insults and make degrading and demeaning statements and call it "debate."

When I check into CE & P, looking for interesting discussion and debate, I am reminded of Mr. Spock: "Beam me up, Scottie. No intelligent life here."

Peace, Pam

Well, I should spend less time there and a little more here. I am an Indy. Is that ok...well of course huh?

It is suppposed to be a political page but Pam you are right, it's been taken over by RW moonbats and end-o-timers to the point of being absurd. I do like my Canadian friends there who fight the good fight and as well there are some intelligent life forms from the US as well.

I like to bait the neo-nazi's then point them out for what they are... guess it's become a hobby of mine.

I may just completely go back to politicalgroove dot com where I have some good friends from the past...most are refugees from Bill Maher's defunct forums...at least there I can feel a sense of community...

I recently found a quote off of PG that sums me up in the Okie room...I am "diagonally parked in a parallel universe".

I give a lot of credit to the Canadians and some others there that are making the right wing dumbasses look like fools. Hell the Canadians know more about US politics than right wing nutjobs do.

Josh, let me say "Amen" to that!

It is stunning to see so much stupidity in one place as Current Events & Politics.

I have decided I don't mind being considered or called an "elitist." I have earned the right to think some of those wack-jobs are just that.

I read a lot everyday (online and a daily newspaper), find and use multiple sources of information, hold back from having an opinion until I have enough information, share my opinions with rational and well-thought-out words and try to refrain from insults. Those people do try my resolve on that last point, though.

They (see the thread title for a full description of "they") have high-jacked what could be a fun forum. There were once some very articulate and smart posters in CE&P who have long gone from the site. They decided to leave because there is no room for intelligent discussion over there.

I miss their intelligent thoughts and posts. This site is poorer for their absence.

Peace, Pam

Welcome, fzappa & josh.

Most every time I've posted over there, they've called me ignorant and crazy. Maybe it's time for me to dip my toes back in the waters over there. I'm tempted.

Now the other conservatives really got of line. One of them said it would be good for this country if Obama was assassinated! And this is from a thread about a conservative man that brought a gun to an Obama townhall meeting.

And the conservative a**holes are all defending that guy! What a bunch a hypocrites they call Obama a terrorist yet they are defending a man that had a gun to a Obama townhall meeting where he could've been easily shot.

I had posted a thread called 'I have been to hell' as my first thread here in the Dem's forum and it was about the 'current events forum'. It's the first place I came to when I joined and pretty much only posted to. I really began to start feeling the energy there was almost completely negative. I don't know about anyone else but negative energy actually makes me feel almost physically ill. I was emailed about this forum and was excited to see for the most part so far people seem to be more respectful, though I haven't read many threads yet. For some odd reason Liberals seem to be more positive people. Or am I missing something. I never thought Republicans were as vicious as I have seen them here and on some cable talk shows. For as much as folks hate liberals over there, it wasn't the liberals that were cussing everything in sight.

I guess I just don't get all the anger. I also think that though we might have thought racism was gone, I think it's just been hiding and Obama has brought them to the surface. It scares me to death frankly. I don't even remember those that hated Bush to be this vile and this angry. ...

I am delighted that this forum exists and hope to spend more time here, but I think it's also important to stand up to racism, sexism or any ism, I don't care where I am, and I'm probably crazy to in some cases, but then I also find that when you stand up to them they are so shocked they actually back down. Fellow progressives,

Please don't lose heart at the volume -both amount and loudness- of the Uptighty Righties posting here and in almost every other forum-based site on the 'Net; just keep remembering that lies have to be constantly repeated to sink in, while the truth, common sense, and civil discourse stands on it's own merits.
Plus, it is true that there is more Neocon/Populist posting in forums...because Progressives tend to actually split their time reading and responding to other sources of information: like BOOKS, NEWSPAPERS, and ACTUAL INTELLIGENT CONVERSATION, so we don't have the time to engage in a constant hate-mongering, fear inducing pessimistic circle jerk.

Well that certainly made me feel better. I'm glad to hear that. Is it my imagination or are liberals just less uptight than those on the right. People in the republican party that I see on cable just seem to uptight, you can see it in their faces and their body language. I'm talking about the ones that get all the attention. Like Michelle Bachman and Steele and others.

I really liked Collen Powell, in fact he reminds me alot of Obama. But I haven't seem many republican like Powell in a long time.

I also notice on cable many Blacks that don't like Obama either and I notice they are mostly christian right.. What's that all about? Does it have to do with stances on abortion, religion and gays etc..

FINALLY. A group of people who speak SENSE! I have been hanging out in the 50's group, and have been so dismayed at some of the people there. Pyl (or whatever his name is) is completely and totally disgusting....blocked him.

I am so thankful to have found this group of people. I feel like I've "come home" in a sense. You are so right: they are very, very angry people, and it depresses me.
